Meet our new School Nurse
Hello Everyone! My name is Miss Brooke and I will be the new school nurse! I was born and raised in Northern Vermont but have happily relocated to Randolph. Since graduating from Castleton University, I have worked at both DHMC and UVMMC. I am very excited to be transitioning from a hospital role to a school nurse role. During the winter months, you can find me either at Brookfield elementary, Braintree elementary, or playing outside in the snow with my two dogs! I look forward to helping both schools finish the 21'-22' school year strong!
Eating Well and Having Fun
Farmer Kelly joined students on Wednesday for a Roasted Parsnip Taste Test. Students helped to build the fire and cut up the parsnips. Then we roasted the parsnips over the open fire and dressed them with a little local maple syrup and a touch of salt. But that only got our taste buds revved up.
We then did a unit on India, Indian food, world religions, and culture. Following the recipe to the right, we made a tasty Indian cucumber salad with yogurt, garlic, and mint. We then went on to learn about Mahatma Gandhi and non violent activism, concluding with a look at the tradition of the Bindi and its symbolism. This topic has brought reading to life through the exploration of a far away place and learning about the people who live there.
Trout Project Update
The eggs have hatched! A big thank you goes out to Ron Kovanik (Wylie's grandfather) who is on the board of Trout Unlimited which sponsors the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program. Ron comes in 3 times a week to do water testing with students. Student are recording the growth and development of the trout with his help. Check out the alevins (hatched troutlings) to the right!
Braintree Elementary students and teachers have been working on robotic assignments and coding challenges this month, showcasing the skills and learning that has been made possible by the Vermont Lottery and Agency of Education Educate/Innovate Initiative.
Leaders from those two organizations joined Orange Southwest School District (OSSD) Technology Director Tina Scheindel for a one-hour presentation by the students that included brightly colored robots that they had built and programmed.
Students in grades 1-6 are continuing with robots. In the coming weeks, robotics will be aligned with the current topics being studied in their math classes. Check out this short video highlighting students in grades 5 & 6 programing robots to plot parallelograms. If you listen closely, you can hear that students programed the robot to call out the x,y coordinates of the vertices as it traveled the lines of the shape.
