Dear OSSD Families,

With most of the distractions due to COVID behind us, the district can re-engage in the significant work it had begun prior to the pandemic, focused mainly on student engagement and student achievement.  As a part of this work, we want to follow through on the Board’s strategic plan that was created during the pandemic: the establishment of a life skills program for students.

The World Health Organization defines life skills as, abilities that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life – in our case, those skills that are not explicitly taught as part of the K-12 curriculum.

Because the demands of everyday life may differ significantly between states and communities, we need to tailor a program that supports students who grow up in central Vermont; to do that, we need the help of a few RUHS alumni - both young and old - who can tell us what life skills (e.g. changing a tire, balancing a checkbook, planning for retirement) you wish you had learned in school that would have made the transition to adult life easier.

On August 29th, the life skills development team will meet at RUHS from 9:30 AM until 11:15 AM and we are are hoping that a few alumni will be able to join us.  We recognize the time is not the most convenient, but it is the best we can find that will allow some of our faculty and students to sit at the table during these discussions.  If you are able to attend, and have ideas to share, please send me an email at lmillington@orangesouthwest. org - spots will be limited to three, so we will take the first three folks to respond.

Our thanks in advance,

Layne Millington, Supt
