Dual / Concurrent Enrollment & Articulation Agreements
The Orange Southwest School District strongly believes that giving students the opportunity to gain college credit while still in high school provides great benefit to the students by allowing them to experience college level work which will better prepare them for the transition to higher education if that is the path they wish to pursue after graduation.
The benefits of dual enrollment and articulation agreements are many, and include the ability to save money on tuition costs as well as to take lighter course loads. To that end, we are actively and continually pursuing opportunities with a variety of institutions in Vermont as well as in other states.
Students are not the only ones to benefit from these partnerships. Teachers and instructors have the chance to become aligned with college faculty, which helps to build relationships between institutions and increase the rigor of our courses.
Articulation Agreements are an arrangement whereby a college or university identifies high school courses that they consider to be the equivalent of (and aligned to) one or more of their courses for students who enroll at the institution. Typically, this means that the college/university will waive the requirement that a student take the course at the college because the student has gained the equivalent knowledge in high school. Articulation agreements are beneficial to students in that they could elect to take a lighter academic load during their first semester, which could increase the amount of time available for concentrating on other courses and, in turn, the chance for academic success. Additionally, students may realize savings in tuition depending on how many courses are waived and the manner in which a college or university charges tuition.
Dual Enrollment Agreements are those whereby a student will gain transcripted credit from a college or university. Dual enrollment courses are taken at a college or university, either on campus or on line. Transcripted credit is valuable in that it is not only accepted at the partner institution but, in most cases, is transferable to another post secondary institution. Again, this provides a student with the opportunity to take a lighter academic load in their first year of college and may result in some tuition savings.
Concurrent Enrollment courses are taught at RUHS/RTCC by our faculty. Courses, syllabi and instructors are approved by individual colleges and are considered to be adjunct professors at those colleges. Typically, a teacher will decide which students in his or her class are good candidates to enroll. Students need to apply to the participating college and have the necessary Accuplacer scores or other criteria required by the college. Students in concurrent enrollment courses are considered students at that college as well as at RUHS/RTCC. The credit they gain is considered as transcripted credit earned at the college.
It is the expectation that students enrolled in these courses are doing college level work which is above and beyond what the other students in the class are doing.
The Vermont Dual Enrollment Program allows students to take college courses, free of charge, at 20 participating Vermont institutions. Students may also take additional courses at a reduced rate of tuition.
The Early College Program allows students to enroll at a college, completing their senior year of high school and freshman year of college simultaneously, tuition free. Available at CCV, Lyndon State, Johnson State, Castleton State, and Vermont Technical College (The Vermont Academy of Science and Technology).
Dartmouth College's Special Community Student High School Program allows eligible seniors to take one free course per term (fall, winter, and spring); and eligible juniors to take one free course during the winter or spring terms.
Community College of Vermont’s Introduction to College Studies, offered at RUHS, allows sophomores, juniors and seniors to develop strategies for college success. Students do not gain college credit for this course.
